Staal was hanging around centre ice when Blues forwards David Backes and T.J. Oshie lost the puck on a botched play in Carolina’s zone. The Hurricanes captain put on the jets and beat Blues goalie Brian Elliott to put the ‘Canes up 3-1.
The Hurricanes led 4-3 heading into the second intermission, off of goals from Staal, RIley Nash (2) and Jeff Skinner.
